Urban Strategies and Theory of the Landscape 

URBAN MEASURES_Every spatial manipulation of a given environment triggers changes of an existing, complex system of mutual dependencies. As the natural and cultural environment is constituted by manifold reciprocal relationships between material and immaterial conditions, the particular temporal, geographical and sociopolitical situation make up the specific framework for adopting change. By means of selected examples, common paradigms of urban and spatial organizational principles are critically reflected in order to reassess their relevance in regard to actual political and societal dynamics. 

In lectures, guest lectures and seminar, the course puts emphasis to critically reflecting the notion of urban quality and related urban measures in a threefold meaning of the term: indicators, dimensions and methods of measuring quality as much as related parameters and regulations of its successful-, or failed implementation, drawing special attention to the positioning of architectural discourse within the planning disciplines.  Methodological framework is the strategic potential of descriptive models and speculative thinking.

 

 

Examination Modalities

Oral Exam / Presentation: graphical/written investigation of a given topic with negotiable focus, related to the subject of the course
