The still life (as a photographic genre) experienced a renaissance in recent years. While primarily existing within the context of stock- and advertising-related imagery in the late 20th century, it revived in fine-art discourses related to photography in the early 21st century. What are the reasons for the return and the rising popularity of the staged studio photography of inanimated objects? Why did the constructed image in relation to contemporary image production regain relevance, and what are potential connections to established still life image categories?

The course will start with discussing approaches of established artists of the 20th century related to the constructed photographic image (Paul Outerbridge, Jan Groover, Barbara Kasten, Neil Winokur etc.), however its main focus will aim towards contemporary image production, especially its shifting technical circumstances (digital post production, distribution and re-contextualization via digital media), and those related artists who progressed the photographic still life (or the constructed photographic image) in recent years (Lucas Blalock, Torbjørn Rødland, Jessica Eaton, thejogging.tumblr.com etc.). Following the theoretical discourse, images based on the discussed artists will be made by every student as well as in groups during the lecture.
