What is Textile? - Textiles as Sciences

Textiles in the 21st century are highly complex products. Nature-sciences are combined with modern technologies. This interdisciplinary combination makes a huge range of divers textiles possible, which we can use in various fields of life. Techno fibers emerge more and more in our daily garments. But these are just the peak of the iceberg. Even common nature-fibers, like cotton, wool or silk are highly technologically processed with chemical, biological and physical treatments.  Those possibilities cause nevertheless ecological, social and even health problems. That is way it is necessary to concern oneself how to use and treat and maunfacture them.

The course is part of new focus of the Textile-Department. Textiles will, additionally to their use as an artificial and design medium, also be issued as a huge field of scientific research.

Procedure of the course:

The project will last at least for one year. Next to phases of lectures, extern textile experts will be invited, as well as we will visit textile laboratories and producers. In the first semester the focus will be on basic textile-material knowledge. Starting from this you will be asked to go deeper and research on your own into special fields of textile technologies. Paralelly you will plan individual Art and/or Design Project based on your research as well as educational concepts.

Examination Modalities

Requirements:

  • the taught knowledge shall be researched deeper on your own and presented at milestones appointments during the semester.
  • developement of Works of Art and/or Design based on the research.
