Beschreibung

Physical Theory: Space, Time, Substance (Philosophy, Science) This course examines some late 20th century models of physical reality that have both impacted architectural (as well as urban and environmental) thought in recent decades and provided forms of explanation that have freed us from the simplistic and one-dimensional understandings provided by mere common sense. In large measure, these models represent foundational departures from classical models of thought (and suppositions inherited from earlier centuries still dominated by religious, political and epistemological orthodoxies and superstitions). Capital among the developments that marked these post-classical movements are the problems of time, movement, and matter and their secondary presentations in processes of transformation and organization. Readings from pre-Socratics through late 20th century French thought as well as new models of explanation in late 20th century mathematics and life sciences will be studied with a view to transforming basic reflexes of design practice and thought.
