Motivation:
The impact of environmental and ecological parameters becomes increasingly formative in architectural design. To give architects a head start within this discourse, this course aims to develope design strategies that integrate architectural sciences, such as buliding physics and ecological engineering, into the design process.
Energy Design Strategies:
Energy Design is basically seen as a design strategy, which allows to develope systems to balance the energy consumption and the energy production of buildings. Beyond that, in this course, energy shall not only be discussed as an economic and physical quantity, but in the context of perceptual qualities. Energy design strategies shall thus be applied at the very beginning of the design process, not only informing the design for an improved energy performance, but making energy-related environmental qualities an intrinsic part of the architectural experience.
Form-Finding, Optimization, Fabrication:
Existing parametric and generative desing strategies usually focus on either the automate composition of form, the optimization of previously conceived forms or the data-driven fabrication of building components (file-to-factory, rapid manufacturing). All of these shall be involved in the design research.
Methodology:
Parametric methodes and software for building performance evaluation are combined to pursue a design research in performance-driven architecture.
Design Task:
Challenge the Skin.
Fields of different energetic qualities shall be specified by super-imposing areas of human activity and local environmental conditions. By this, the notion of interior and exterior shall be challenged anew. Spaces shall be defined not only by enclosure, but by different temperature, light, humidity, accoustic qualities, as well as the availability of energetic qualities, such as electricity, heat or coldness and different patterns of change. All energy necessary for the performance, shall be either derived from the shape or skin design itself, or from on-site energy production.
Prüfungsmodalitäten
Based on an individual research agenda, students develope a specific design study. The study is presented on a poster DIN A1 and as a booklet, at least 8 pages DIN A4.
